Six major motion pictures have filmed scenes in Malden since 2013. Below is a rundown of the titles and filming locations, followed by some examples of how the city has spent its newfound movie money.

The approximately $200,000 that Malden received for Patriots Day was atypical, given the film's big budget and extensive time spent in Malden. For the untitled Detroit project that filmed in Malden this year, for example, the city received about $1,500.

    • American Hustle – 2013 – West End neighborhood
    • Ted 2 – 2014 – Malden Public Library
    • Central Intelligence – 2015 – Canal and Charles streets
    • Patriots Day – 2016 – Edgeworth neighborhood; downtown Malden
    • Bridgewater – 2016 – West End neighborhood
    • Untitled Detroit project – 2016 – Malden Police Station; motel on Broadway

Examples of movie funds earmarked by the city of Malden:

    • $25,000 for the Respond program for domestic violence run out of the Malden Police station
    • $25,000 for the Energov software used by the Permits, Inspections and Planning Services department
    • $20,000 for track scholarships at Malden High School
    • $5,000 for programming at the Malden Teen Enrichment Center
    • Funding for new radios for parking enforcement officers
    • Funding for the holiday parade, senior cookout, and summer concert series
    • Funding for the police and fire departments, including to detail a Cataldo ambulance vehicle to be converted into a fire prevention vehicle
    • Funding to be spent by Ward 3 and Ward 8 city councilors from movies filmed in their respective wards
